One of the biggest challenges many teachers face when shifting from traditional teacher-led instruction to blended learning models is the release of control from the teacher to the student.

Ideally, blended learning models are designed to give students more control over the time, place, pace, and path of their learning. As a result, students enjoy more agency and autonomy which can have a positive impact on their motivation and engagement. However, it demands that teachers have created a classroom learning environment (physical and virtual) characterized by respect.

Below are eight simple routines that can help teachers establish and maintain a respectful learning environment.

I invite other teachers and coaches to share additional routines they have used with success to create respectful and productive classrooms. Thank you in advance.

  1. Thank you for sharing these suggested routines to help keep blended learning respectful and orderly. I’ve recently began investigating blended learning and classroom management is one of my concerns. All great suggestions! #3: Do not talk until students are quiet… I like to remind students that my wait time decreases their free time. I also like involving students in the decision making – depending on age or maturity level. It gives them ownership of their behavior.
    Thank you for sharing,

  2. A great idea to help the students take their own responsibility in their learning. I also like number 3 waiting for students to be quite before I speak, a great classroom management tool.

  3. All the points are great especially the last one. When students are invited to generate a list of behaviors that will help have a nice place to learn and consequences for not following those behaviors the end result is everything will run smoothly.

  4. I like “Eyes on me and screen at 45 degrees” because I sometimes say close you chrome books and then we have to continue to use them and it takes some time to login. Thank you for that, I will use it.

  5. Thank you for validating that a teacher must stay quiet before they can get all the students’ attention. It works! It’s one of the best ways to get the students to hear and redirect themselves.

  6. These are great suggestions that have been used throughout the years for successful classrooms when setting the tone, being consistent, and going over classroom expectations. Also allowing then to take part in setting up norms for classrooms and among all the other great suggestions.

  7. These are great classroom management suggestions. The wait time is important for students to know what you are saying is important.

  8. All of these ideas are good and I will be implementing several over the course of this next year.

  9. These are a great reminder… too often we/I begin with these at the start of the year and then…….. you know what happens…

  10. excelentes y muy buenas ideas para utilizar y poner en práctica para una mejor gestión en el aula
