During this 4-week online professional development course, I will share my firsthand knowledge of how to successfully introduce an online discussion platform that complements your in-class instruction!

I have attended many professional development courses and workshops throughout my teaching career. The majority of them left me feeling unsatisfied. Many had no direct impact on my day-to-day success with students. It is my goal to provide informative webinars, facilitate interesting discussions, and provide hands-on activities to support you in creating a safe, respectful and productive online community now!

You will leave this course with the resources necessary to successfully adopt a learning model that combines the best of both worlds: the benefits of in-class instruction with the flexibility of online discussions for any subject.

This course titled “How to Engage Students Online, Increase Participation, and Improve Discussions,” will support teachers in successfully integrating an online learning platform into their curriculum to be more effective, efficient and innovative.

Topics covered:

  • Create a Safe Space Online
  • Art of Asking Questions that Drive Discussions
  • Support Students in Saying Something Substantial
  • Weaving Strategies to Integrate Work Online into the Classroom

Since I have found fellow educators to be invaluable resources, this course will provide opportunities to collaborate with other educators, practice online facilitation and discussion skills, and prepare a Collaborize Classroom site for use with students.

Each week will be a combination of a one hour webinar complemented by asynchronous discussions with other educators about the topics presented in webinar and a weekly task that will allow you to apply what you learned in the webinar to your own online learning platform.

  1. E-learning does provide faster learning, but it’s also customizable. My company, Eduplanet actually focuses one professional development for educators, as I believe it’s a great way for teachers to both gain perspective and take advantage of the resources available through Internet-facilitated learning. Our social learning model combines social networking and e-Learning technologies together to create an effective model for 21st Century Learning. I think if we start with the teacher in mind, we can best chart the course for a productive e-learning model for the students.
